Photographing Strong Kids and Families

All my adult life I have been doing volunteer work with kids: literacy training in public schools, Big Brother volunteer, hosting foreign exchange students through AFS (ongoing). Five years ago I stumbled upon Flashes of Hope. The national organization photographs patients in pediatric cancer treatment centers and their families.  I am currently the New York Chapter Director.

I was initially attracted to the organization because it focused on two of my passions: children and photography. I had no idea how meaningful our work is to the families we serve. First, it is a fun diversion. We have hair and makeup and make a really big deal to make sure the subjects feel very special. We bring a lot of levity onto the “set” (a backdrop and lighting equipment squeezed into whatever spare space we can find). The families are so grateful for the photos. For the kids who get better, they document a monumental time in the life.  For the families who lose kids the photos are loving memories that are cherished.

I started off just as a photographer.  I was extremely moved by the work we were doing. I volunteered as Chapter Director so I can be more involved on a regular basis. Usually I am organizing the shoots, booking hair and makeup and a photographer.  I love sharing the experience with colleagues. It is incredible how emotional it is for all involved.

Tuesday I decided to take a turn as a photographer. It was a particularly difficult shoot emotionally since I was told that 4 of the 5 kids were under palliative care. The families are so generous with their appreciation and emotion. Lots of love.  I am still feeling the effect from the day.

A big  THANK YOU to Richard Piana and nuBest Salon for providing hair and makeup bringing all the more beauty into the shoot. Also a real appreciation for all Child Life specialists. Every one of you are angels.

Kids Fashion Photography, NYC

Yesterday, a rainy May New York morning, we had a faux snowball fight, drank fake hot chocolate with real whipped cream, and had a lot of silly fun photographing kids outerwear fashion for BJ’s and Costco.

Models Adrian from Generation Model Management and Emma from FFT New York killed it.

I love shooting kids (with a camera, of course).

The ham that I am, I had to don a men’s jacket and get into a fun photo with the kids.

Fashion Catalog Photography

Wednesday evening.  Just completed my third day shooting for the early fall McCall’s Pattern Company catalog; two more days to go!  McCall’s creates patterns for home sewers to create their own clothing.  The company has a deep, rich history dating back to 1870! I had the pleasure of working in their studio and touring their catalog archives.  They have all of their past catalogs and is a real history of fashion and trends. A plethora of supermodels have graced the covers!

The amount of preparation and thought that goes into each shoot is really impressive.  I am honored to be entrusted to help execute the team’s vision while adding my personal style to each shoot. The art direction, styling, model casting, makeup/hair and organization is always on point.

It is a thrill to receive the catalog after it is printed.  I love doing photography for this client!

Since there is an embargo on the fashion images I can only show limited images I take specifically to share for social media.  I get approval from the fashion editor prior to posting.

Here are some natural light beauty images of models Sam Vrielink of Wilhelmina New York, myself with model Bamboo (Shine Ibu),  Lauren Macarro of State Management NYC, Karen cutting Lauren’s hair (not) and Anna Vorobyeva Wilhelmina New York in the makeup chair with makeup artist Dawn Brocco and fashion director Karen Duffy.

Can’t wait to shoot children’s fashion tomorrow!

Love kids fashion photography!

All my adult life I have been volunteering with children.  I have done literacy work in New York City elementary and high schools for 10 years, a volunteer for Catholic Big Brothers for 8 years, and have hosted 6 foreign exchange students through AFS, each for a full school year.

It goes without saying I love photographing kids.  Where it is not a large percentage of my work, I find it fun and gratifying.  The younger they are, the more difficult it is.  Try getting a cranky two year old to stand on a specific spot, facing forward, and smiling while the clothes look well styled!

I don’t share much of my children’s work, but here is a new collection from one of my NYC fashion clients.  We shot it this spring.  I am excited to hear it is already in 50 stores!

Photography for an Amazing Cause!

When I am not shooting fashion or beauty I love serving as the NYC Chapter Director for Flashes of Hope, a national charity that brings commercial photographers into juvenile cancer treatment centers to photograph the patients and their families.

Today I had the pleasure of running a photo shoot with photographer Shirin Tinati who specializes in actors’ head shots and makeup artist Marilyn Wise.  Shirin is also a cancer survivor which makes the experience all the more meaningful.

Working with this organization puts a lot of things into perspective.  The experience is grounding.  The kids are amazing.  The parents are strong.  The child life specialists, nurses, doctors and hospital staff are incredible!

Children’s Fashion Photography

I love kids.  For most of my adult life I have done volunteer work with them: literacy training, big brother, hosting foreign exchange students through AFS, and currently New York chapter director for Flashes of Hope.

Most of my commercial work is womenswear.  It is always a treat to shoot kids’ fashion!

My client Chach Beach produces a wonderful women’s and girl’s collection of beachwear.  I love working with them, especially with the girls!  I love the canary yellow backdrop!

Here I am posing with the model’s for the last shot of the day!
