First photo shoot with my new hip!

In younger days I was quite passionate training in wrestling and karate.  Part of the regime was running.  I loved to ski as well. Almost 20 years ago I felt some stiffness in my hip. Thinking it was stubborn tendonitis I went to a doctor to have it checked out.  Unfortunately the diagnosis was early onset of arthritis, which I have been living with since.  I traded in the dojo for a swimming pool and the running shoes for a bicycle.  For the past 3 years pilates has kept me in good shape.  After a visit to my doctor in June, we decided it was time for a change, and scheduled replacement surgery for December 11, 2014.  My work schedule slows down around the holidays.  I let my clients know I would be out for 5 weeks and tried to schedule shoots the best I could.  I lost a couple of jobs, but not too bad.  I was dreading surgery up until I was sitting in the operating room, hooked up to an IV, and the anesthesia knocked me out.  When I woke up in recovery I was very happy I had it done and looked forward to recuperating and a better quality of life.

It has been 5-1/2 weeks since surgery.  I have been doing physical therapy every day trying my best to get back to work.  Yesterday was my first shoot.  I was nervous that I would start feeling sore and the joint would fatigue.  I felt great!  It was nice to get back into the studio.  The job was demanding and I felt no pain or tightness.  I am looking forward to full recovery and of course more work!

If you need a new hip, Dr. Roy Davidovitch is your man (NYU Hospital for Joint Disease).  If you want to see an animated video of the procedure, check out this link.  Pretty crazy.

Here is some behind the scenes from yesterday’s shoot for Alice and Trixie.  Robin Buss of Muse NYC was our gorgeous model.  The last photo of me on the ladder was taken by my assistant at the end of the day!

Losing a talented hair stylist and friend

This year began on a very sad note.  I lost my friend and gifted hair stylist Karen Bishop.  Every time Karen walked into the studio the room would brighten up.  I would play soul from the 70’s and the day flew by.  Karen had a talent to bring out the inner beauty of everyone she encountered.  She will be greatly missed by many people.  Below are two images from the last shoot we did together with Jackie Sanchez (makeup).  Models are Meron Mamo (Red NYC) and Dieynaba Diop (Adam Models).

Beauty Editorial

Here are some behind the scenes photos from a beauty editorial I shot Sunday for Fashion Reverie Magazine.

The theme was a nail slumber party.  The editor was looking to shoot in a hotel room.  Thinking that the location would not look authentic enough, I offered my guest bedroom.  Shooting in my house is always a mixed bag… I like not having to travel to a location but having your home turned upside down for a day can be a drag.  Thankfully the shoot was low impact, the team was great, and we are all very excited about the images we created.  Love to Tiri (Q Models), Violetta (Q Models) and Madison Massey (Major Model Management) as well as T.Cooper – hair and makeup, and  Angi Wingle  of CND (nails).

Here are some behind the scenes photos.  Can’t wait to share the images we created!

Fashion shoot for social media campaign and an encounter with a peaceful protest.

I love being busy!  Yesterday had an early start meeting my assistant at my studio to pick up gear, then head over to the client Vigoss Jeans‘ showroom to shoot for their website and social media campaign.

The showroom had an unobstructed, breathtaking view south.  However I had the difficult task to keep my eyes on the beautiful Bruna Marx from FentonMoon.  It was a very successful shoot with a fun team.

After wrapping up, getting my car from the garage in Times Square, loading up my gear, heading back to the studio, unloading my gear I started to make my way back to Brooklyn via the Manhattan Bridge.  Usually I have a fairly easy drive home, but after all, this is NYC and sometimes traffic can be a nightmare.

Unfortunately this was the case.  As I neared the bridge traffic stopped.  I switched the radio from music to news to hear about the Eric Garner protest that snarled traffic in downtown Manhattan closing off downtown bridges and tunnels.  I sympathize with the cause, am pleased that the protests were for the most part peaceful.  After an hour of being at a standstill I headed north to Soho, stopped at my father’s apartment for a visit and Chinese food while waiting for traffic to ease up.

By the time I left the Manhattan Bridge was still closed so I planned an alternate route home.  I arrived in time to catch the 11 pm news.

While stuck in traffic I had the chance to roll down my window and speak with other drivers (many cabbies).  Everyone seemed ok with what was going on.  No one was too irate or annoyed.  Although far from perfect, we are blessed to live in a society where we have the right to assemble and openly air our grievances.

Here is a view from the showroom, a behind the scenes photo and a shot of Bruna.

Lingerie Photography – again

I haven’t looked very hard at the photos I took from yesterday’s shoot which I blogged about in this post… but my client has!

She just send me this stunner of model Irina Kondrateva of Q Models NYC. Needless to say she is quite pleased with our results!

Lingerie Catalog

For years I have wanted to work with Irina Kondrateva of Q Models.  Go figure this is the second time shooting her in 3 weeks.  She is as sweet as she is beautiful.  We photographed a lingerie catalog today with a wonderful, talented team – Alexandra Fongaro hair and Lilly Jean makeup that made the day a breeze.

Here are a couple of behind the scenes photos and some images of the looks that we shot.  Please note these images are not retouched and are straight out of the camera… just cropped and resized.

Beauty with Quirine from New York Models

Two weeks I worked with Dutch beauty Quirine Engel from New York Models. The concept was natural makeup and loose hair.  I posted some behind the scenes photos here: BTS.

I am super happy with the results.  Makeup by Lizzie Lerman using Nars Cosmetics, hair by Ayato Yokojima using Milbon products.

Love seeing my work in model portfolios

I photographed a fashion editorial for Bambi Magazine (NSFW) with Alyona Shishmareva.  I recently looked at her online portfolio on her New York agency website Q Models NYC.

I was very pleased to see some of the images we shot in her book.

Flashes of Hope – photo shoot

I am very proud to be the New York Chapter Director for Flashes of Hope, a national organization that brings commercial photographers into treatment centers for juvenile cancer to photograph the patients and their families.

Yesterday I coordinated a shoot at Cohen’s Children’s Hospital, New Hyde Park, NY.  I brought in my photographer friend and neighbor Greg Morris to shoot.  This is Greg’s second time working with Flashes of Hope.  I have also partnered with nuBest  Salon and Spa to provide hair and makeup.  The nuBest team has been amazing.

We come into the hospital, create a studio set up, groom our subjects with hair and makeup, and take pictures.

What none of us are prepared for or expect is how appreciative the families are.  I am still blown away by the thanks I get for providing photos and how meaningful the photos are to the families.  Actually, it is us that should be thanking the families for the opportunity to work with them.  How often do photographers have a subject step onto a set and give them genuine emotion… joy, sadness, fear, optimism, strength, and love… mostly love?

It is an emotional day for us, which keeps us coming back for more!

Here are some behind the scenes photos from yesterday’s photo shoot:

Beauty photography in my NYC studio

Yesterday I took a day to shoot a test in studio.  Booked the stunning Dutch beauty Quirine Engel from New York Models.  Lizzie Lerman did her makeup and Ayato Yokojima did hair.  Lizzie was referred to me by Jillian of Exclusive Artist Management.  I have been working with Ayato for years.  We started very clean and built the makeup gradually, but never too heavy.  Quirine was a pleasure to work with.  I am very happy with the photos.  Here are a couple of behind the scenes photos.  I will post the finished images once they have been selected and retouched.

Monday I will be shooting a lookbook for a Korean designer, Tuesday I am coordinating a shoot for Flashes of Hope… can’t wait for the weekend to be over so I can get back to work!
