Family Portrait Photography

Saturday I had the opportunity to photograph a wonderful family from Long Island celebrating the parents/grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary. This is a departure from my normal commercial fashion and beauty work, but was refreshing and welcome!  I love photographing people! We met at my studio.  I was set up and ready to go.  We had 6 adults and 4 kids individually and in various combinations.  There was so much love and everyone was so comfortable. The kids were amazing. All I had to say is “get closer” or “pile on dad” and magic happened! I used both strobes and natural light to vary the feel of the images. My favorite moment was when the kids started to get really animated, running up the curved cyclorama wall and photo bombing.

I got lots of wonderful compliments.  The ultimate was in and email received the next day wanting to make the day an annual event!

Below is the last frame of the day with me jumping in!

Great photographers wear glasses!

My photo assistant Kentaro Minami had a personal project taking polaroids of photographers.  A couple of months after he took my polaroid I asked him to see his project.  Kentaro brought me a photo album.  Leafing through the pages I found my picture flanked by portraits of photographers Bruce Davidson and Stephen Shore.  Talking about being surrounded by greatness!  I was quite flattered!

Behind the Scenes from a Catalog shoot

Once photography stops being fun I am going to quit.

Yesterday I had the pleasure shooting with Lindsay Phenix from Red Model Management NYC and Olga Kubrak from Major Models New York.  It was a long day with lots of looks but we keep it light and have some fun in the studio on and off set.  At one point Olga accused me of being a very serious photographer; my makeup artist Veronika Robova rolled her eyes.  We are professionals, we take our work very seriously, but lets face it, this fashion photography and the object is to have fun making beautiful photos that sell clothing and a lifestyle.

One shoe on, one shoe off… Veronika confuses Olga!

Houston native Lindsay Phenix is inspired by the UT orange and flashes the “hook ’em horns” sign. Unfortunately the Longhorns are 3 and 5 this season.  The bbq still kicks ass!

On the Other Side of the Camera!

This winter my friend and former assistant Kentaro Minami visited NYC with his client Mitsukoshi Department Store to photograph events and other assignments. One of the assignments were to create photos of their newly designed shopping bag being used by people. I was quite flattered when he asked me and my family to model for the shoot, which of course includes our Italian exchange student Caterina and our vizsla, Hoshi. Sunday morning we had the crew over for a typical New York breakfast of bagels, lox, and cream cheese, then got down to work: hair, makeup, styling and shooting in my Brooklyn home.

The photos were recently hung in windows at their flagship store in Tokyo. Unfortunately my schedule does not permit me to visit Tokyo and stand next to the window in order to greet my Japanese fans and autograph shopping bags. I am thrilled to have the experience, memories, and photos! I love being on the model side of the camera.

Baby photo

When my wife was expecting a child, we did what many first time parents do, enroll in a child birth class. There we met 3 other couples who were also expecting their first child. This core was the base for a weekly mothers group that grew to a membership of 13. It was instant community which provide support, camaraderie, and much needed wine. (Insert Park Slope, Brooklyn joke here.)

Over the years, the kids grew and there was less need (and time) for meetings. The babies developed into independent people (well, you know what I mean) with their own interests and friends.

In August the kids will all be going off to school spreading themselves across the continental United States. Last Sunday we had a reunion. It was very sweet how the kids instantly reconnected, even if it took a moment to figure out who was who. When the party was starting to break up, my son Sam was not ready to leave. He hung back with a half dozen other peers, and slowly made his way home. I hope the bond and memories hold strong.

I am excited for Sam preparing for his new stage in life. I will try not to get too nostalgic.
Nice to get a last group photo.
